Errant dust is the enemy and Westshore has one of the most advanced dust suppression systems of any dry bulk terminal in the world. Environmental
management is not left to chance and the terminal is continuously improving its environmental practices. A recent equipment upgrade will speed ship
and train turnaround and help reduce Westshore’s ecological footprint.
The terminal has a fully-integrated, on-line system to monitor weather conditions around the clock to warn of surprise wind storms. The dust control system includes:
- 38 high-mast sprays ring the site
- 79 ground-level rain guns direct water onto lower levels
- Four 125-foot high central water spray towers; one more in the planning
- All four stacker-reclaimers have dust suppression sprays
- Coal cars are washed down after unloading
- A fleet of three water trucks is used for road-based patrols
- Mobile dust control command centre enhances our reach
- Sealants are sprayed on internal coal-based roads
- Dust suppressants are sprayed on coal stockpiles
- Off-site dust monitoring stations ensure accurate results
