With over 40 years of business under its belt since official opening day, June 15, 1970, Westshore has amassed some notable milestones along the journey.

  • 600 million tonnes shipped achieved November 2008 when MV Wakashio sailed for Japan with 190, 314 tonnes on board; to that point, Westshore had loaded over 7,300 ships and dumped 58,100 trains.
  • The first 100 million tonnes shipped took 12 years from opening day in 1970 and was achieved in 1982; the 200mt mark came six years later in 1988; the 300mt came in 1994 and 400mtin 1999. The milestone 500mt mark was achieved in February 2004.
  • US coal was first shipped through Westshore in 1988. Since that trial shipment from Wyoming and the Powder River Basin, US coal shipments have gradually increased despite the 2,500 kilometre haul to port. In 2009, Westshore shipped a record 1.9 million tonnes of US coal, including several shipments from Utah mines.
  • Westshore still holds the world record for a single coal shipment, 239,084 tonnes shipped on board the Hyundai Giant in May 1987.
