With over 200 years of coal reserves at current usage, Canada is well served by productive coal mines. That Canada can remain competitive when coal is huge distances from the port by world standards is a tribute to the men and women and the efficiency of the coal chain.

Westshore draws its coal from four main sources:

  1. Teck Coal in southeastern British Columbia (Coal Mountain, Elkview, Line Creek, Fording River, Greenhills) and Alberta (Cheviot).
  2. Grande Cache Coal in west-central Alberta
  3. Sherritt Canada (Coal Valley, Obed Mountain)
  4. in Alberta.
  5. United States mines in the Powder River Basin (Montana & Wyoming) and Utah.

Most of the mines are large, open pit operations. Grande Cache has one surface mine and an underground mine and is seeking to secure permits to open another underground mine in future.
