With two deep-sea berths, all-tide sailing, and the capability to handle the largest dry bulk carriers in service, Westshore is a reliable, fast and
efficient shipper of coal to the world. About six unit coal trains arrive each day on the twin-rail loop circling Westshore and are dumped in a single
or twin rotary dumper. The coal is transported by high-speed conveyor to stockpile using one of the four giant stacker-reclaimers Westshore has on
site. More and more of the incoming trains are targeted to waiting ships and this “direct hit” method of coal handling is more efficient for the coal chain.
Westshore typically has about 30% of its incoming coal loaded as direct hits.
Berth One, the outer dock, can handle vessels up to 260,000 deadweight tonnes using a single, rail-mounted shiploader capable of loading at a rate of 7,000 tonnes per hour.
Berth Two, Westshore’s original dock opened in 1970, was completely revamped after storm damage in 2003 and its two quadrant shiploaders can
combine for a loading rate of 7,000tph. Vessels up to 180,000 dwt can be handled.
